Last school term, I facilitated half a dozen sessions with a group of secondary school students who had the opportunity to get started with javaScript through play. We used the strategy game Codecombat, which allows students to write code and use computational thinking to guide their character through obstacles and battles.
The game uses a series of challenges that introduces to the basis of computer programming and challenges the students to learn about debugging as well as to collaborate with their peers.
The students followed Codecombat’s Introduction to computer science and Computer science level 2.
I did get some feedback from one parent on the last day of the term, who told me how much her son had enjoyed the coding club and that he was doing lots at home!
I’ll definitely repeat the experience.
A big ‘thank you’ to Codecombat for giving us free access to their resources.
